East Meets West: Two PhD Students Find Their Marketing Calling in Malaysia’s Melting Pot

Zhang Jin and Lu Yiqian, two ambitious PhD students from China, traded the familiar rhythms of their homeland for the vibrant pulse of Malaysia, embarking on a journey of academic discovery at SEGi University. Their pursuit of marketing excellence led them to a melting pot of cultures, where they not only deepened their knowledge but also unlocked their potential as global thinkers.

SEGi’s reputation for academic excellence and industry-relevant programmes initially caught their eye. “The emphasis on practical application and critical thinking immediately resonated with me,” Jin explains. Lu, with her sights set on becoming a lecturer, adds, “The faculty’s expertise and the promise of a diverse learning environment drew me to SEGi.”

But what truly set their SEGi experience apart was the unwavering support they received. But what truly set their SEGi experience apart was the unwavering support they received. “Navigating a new academic environment in a foreign country can be daunting,” Lu admits. “But SEGi’s International Students’ Office provided invaluable assistance with everything from visa renewals to accommodation, ensuring a smooth transition.”

Jin emphasises the university’s commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive atmosphere. “SEGi truly advocates for student concerns,” he shares. “They facilitated open communication, addressing any challenges we faced and fostering a sense of belonging.”

This supportive environment empowered them to step outside their comfort zones and embrace the challenges of adapting to a new culture. “Living in Malaysia pushed me to become more resilient and adaptable,” Lu reflects. “It’s been an incredible exercise in personal and professional growth.”

Jin agrees, adding, “Studying in a multicultural setting broadened my perspective and encouraged me to become more independent and resourceful.” He notes that adapting to the local lifestyle and group work dynamics required patience and open-mindedness, ultimately strengthening his intercultural communication skills.

Their academic journey was further enriched by SEGi’s emphasis on practical learning and industry integration. “The ‘Industry in the Classroom’ initiative, with its real-world projects and collaborations with industry partners, provided invaluable hands-on experience,” Jin explains. “This was a stark contrast to the more theoretical approach to marketing education I was used to in China.”

Lu echoes this sentiment, adding, “While Chinese universities are starting to incorporate more practical elements like problem-based learning, SEGi’s approach is more deeply intertwined with industry, offering direct exposure to real-world marketing challenges and solutions.”

Their time in Malaysia also provided a unique opportunity to observe the interplay between culture and marketing. “It’s fascinating how cultural nuances influence consumer behaviour and marketing strategies here,” Lu observes. “The way brands engage with diverse communities and adapt their messages to resonate with different cultural values is truly insightful.”

Jin adds, “The emphasis on relationship-building and trust in Malaysian business culture underscores the importance of personal connections and community engagement in marketing.”

As they reflect on their SEGi experience, Jin and Lu are filled with gratitude for the transformative journey they’ve undertaken. They leave Malaysia not only with advanced degrees but also with a broadened perspective, a deeper understanding of marketing in a multicultural context, and a newfound confidence to make a positive impact in the world.

“SEGi has equipped us with the skills, knowledge, and cultural awareness to excel in our careers,” Jin remarks. “But more importantly, it has instilled in us a sense of social responsibility and a passion for creating inclusive and impactful marketing strategies.”

Lu adds, “We are leaving Malaysia with a wealth of experiences and memories that will shape our personal and professional lives forever. This journey has been truly transformative.”

Jin and Lu’s story is a testament to SEGi University’s commitment to providing a holistic and enriching educational experience that empowers students to thrive in a globalised world. Their experiences highlight the transformative power of cultural immersion and the importance of fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students from all corners of the globe.
