Eric Lo Li Hung talks about his passion for cooking, and a unique journey that begins by pursuing a Diploma in Culinary Arts at SEGi College Sarawak, turning his passion into a culinary career.

Turning his passion for food into a career

Cooking has always been his passion and it was evident from an early age. Inspired by his mother’s cooking, Lo, who is currently 19, decided to enrol in a culinary course.

He wanted to enhance knowledge and deepen his understanding of culinary. This led to his journey to a career in the culinary world that began at SEGi College Sarawak (SCSWK). Lo is pursuing a Diploma in Culinary Arts.

Culinary at SEGi

It was through favourable word-of-mouth that brought Lo to SEGi. Although culinary programme is offered by several other private higher education providers, Lo is convinced that he can get the best out of SEGi.

Apart from a breadth of theoretical lessons, throughout his studies at SEGi College Sarawak, he was able to apply theory to practice as the institution is equipped with top-notch facilities and amenities.

Active participation in competitions

Lo had participated in many competitions. He won third place in the 20th Sabah Hospitality Fiesta 2017 in the Blackbox: Apprentice category.

“I was excited as it was my first time participating in a cooking competition.” The cooking ground of the hospitality fiesta was divided into four (4) sections – hot, appetizer/dessert, hotel management, and barista sections.

The Blackbox category required participants to compete under the hot section. Lo was quick on his feet as he had to create a dish based on the ingredients given on the spot. The final creation was judged based on its taste, cooking skills, time used, as well as the portioning of the plate.

Lo had also participated in the Food Diversity Programme 2018. Other than culinary, during his free time, Lo enjoys sports activities such as bowling. This talented young chef had also won third place in the Masiswa Bowling Competition in 2017.

Chef in the making “Dream Big, Word Hard, and Make it Happen”

Upon graduation, Lo aspires to work as a chef in the global brand of full-service hotels and resorts, Hilton Hotels and Resorts. He would also love to set up a café, where patrons can have a meal and enjoy the ambience.

His wise words for school leavers who would like to pursue a career in the culinary world – “Be brave, be courageous and be fierce because you never know, you too, can create delicious food”.

SEGi College Sarawak offers a Diploma in Culinary Arts and students will master Asian and European cooking methods, principles of design in food production, nutrition planning as well as management and leadership skills upon graduation.
