18 July 2008 - Aspiring to graduate with an American degree but don’t have the money? Well, if you reside in northern Malaysia, the place to go to is SEGi College Penang.

It is the only college in the Northern region which offers 4+0 American Degree Programs (ADP) in collaboration with Upper Iowa University (UIU), USA.

SEGi College Penang offers 4+0 Bachelor of Science in Psychology apart from the ADP Bachelor of Science majoring in Marketing, Management, Communication, Management Information Systems or Financial Management.

Upper Iowa University degree programs offered at SEGi are designed to give students an all-American experience. This means the American way of teaching and learning, and American culture through interactions with young Americans and special activities organised for ADP students.

What puts an American Degree Program (ADP) apart from the others is the philosophy of teaching. ADPs focus on building character apart from conveying all the necessary knowledge and skills to students.

These programs allows for a lot of student-lecturer interaction and interaction between students. This encourages students to be more vocal in expressing opinions and communicating ideas openly.

Inadvertantly, students are groomed to be confident, brave, independent and creative as well as have good social skills. This difference in education method produces a different sort of graduate.

“Based on my observations, ADP graduates are preferred because of these qualities built into them. The open interaction will benefit students in the real world,” said Jeffrey Goh, Principal of SEGi College Penang.

The program structure itself demands discipline as daily classroom attendance and assignments bears a huge part of the overall assessment of students.

“The ADP is not exam oriented. It focuses more (higher percentage) on evaluating students’ performance throughout the course and less on the final exam,” adds Goh.

UIU’s programs are also very flexible. Students have an option of doing a double major without having to prolong their duration of studies, because they can select course loads for each semester.

“UIU and SEGi have tutor exchange programs to expose our local lecturers to the teaching culture at Upper Iowa. UIU also regularly carries out quality visits to SEGi to ensure programs are parallel to that carried out in UIU in the US, so students can rest assured that the quality of the program in Malaysia and in the US are the same,” said Goh.

According to Goh, what’s popular with the ADP program now is the major in Psychology. The psychology major offers a wider career scope.

Psychology, the study of the human mind and behaviour, is relevant to psychological research and mental healthcare jobs as well as marketing research, corporate training, human resources, and management. In fact, a degree in psychology can also serve as a stepping stone into the business world.

Founded in 1857, Upper Iowa University is the largest private university in Iowa and has its main campus in Fayette, Northeast Iowa. For 150 years, UIU has a tradition of providing quality education and has a long list of accomplished alumni.

UIU ranks in the top 10 percent of colleges in the States for the enhancement of student learning — CLA Learning Report (2007). The University offers relevant, quality degree programs to almost 6,000 students at its residential campus, at learning centres in the US and foreign countries.

Besides 3+0 degree programs, SEGi College Penang offers a multitude of diploma programs that are accredited and approved by MQA (Malaysian Qualification Agency) and the Ministry of Higher Education.

Diploma programs available are business administration, marketing, accountancy, tourism management, early childhood education, hotel management, human resource management, mass communication, computer studies and so on.
